Porsche Has Always Been Serious About Colour
Most manufacturers treat paint as an upsell. Three greys, a white, a black, and a red for the brave. Porsche has spent decades doing the opposite, and it has never entirely been able to explain why.
The evidence is in the back catalogue. Rubystone Red on the 964 RS — a colour that looked like nothing else on a road in 1992 and still divides people now. Riviera Blue on the 993, which became so sought-after that owners repaint cars into it thirty years later. Signal Yellow, Viola Metallic, Mint Green. Porsche also runs Paint to Sample, where you can bring the factory a colour that is not on any chart and they will build the car in it, which is not a service most companies would volunteer to operate.
The GT cars are where this shows up hardest. Buy a 911 Turbo and the odds are decent it leaves in grey. Buy a GT3 and something changes — these are cars bought by people who chose them deliberately, and a deliberate choice tends to keep going right through the colour page. Shark Blue is what that decision looks like when someone commits to it completely.
