The Car That Got Famous for Being Slow
On paper the AE86 has no case to answer. A 1.6-litre engine, 130 PS, four years of production, and a badge that said Corolla. Toyota sold it as an affordable sporty coupé and then moved on to better things. By the mid-nineties they were cheap used cars that young people in Japan bought precisely because they were cheap.
That turned out to matter more than the specification ever did. The AE86 was light, it was rear-wheel drive, the chassis told you everything it was doing, and when you finally got it wrong it slid instead of biting. Keiichi Tsuchiya built an entire career out of that behaviour, and the mountain-pass scene in the hills outside Tokyo built a culture around it. Then a manga put a white-and-black Trueno on a pass called Akina with a tofu delivery riding in the back, and the car stopped being a used Corolla forever.
The prices have followed. Cars that were disposable in 1996 now sell for more than the sports cars they were once the budget alternative to. Not because the AE86 got any quicker — because everything since got heavier, quieter and further away from the driver, and this was the last time Toyota built a Corolla guilty of none of that.
