Honda Finally Said Yes to Boost
For decades, Honda's answer to more power was the same: higher revs, better breathing, no turbocharger. VTEC was the philosophy. The company that built the S2000 to rev past 9,000 rpm had no interest in forced induction. Until the FK2.
The K20C1 was Honda's admission that naturally aspirated engines couldn't meet both emissions targets and the performance expectations Type R buyers demanded. So they turbocharged it. 2.0 liters, 310 PS, 400 Nm of torque, and a delivery that still felt like a Honda: linear, responsive, and willing to rev. It wasn't the screaming VTEC of the '90s, but it was fast in a way those older cars never were.
Honda sent the FK2 to the Nürburgring in 2015 and it ran a 7:50.63, taking the front-wheel-drive production car record. A Civic. On the Nordschleife. Faster than first-generation Nissan GT-Rs, faster than V8 Mustangs, faster than cars with twice the horsepower and driven wheels at all four corners. The FK2 was produced for just two years before the FK8 replaced it, but it was the one that broke the seal on turbocharged Type R's and proved the philosophy could evolve without losing its soul.
