For most of its life the 911 Turbo was the car that arrived at the argument late and ended it. Not the lightest, not the most delicate, not the one the purists nominated — just the one that was already gone by the time anybody finished the sentence.
The Turbo S badge marks the moments Porsche pushed that further than the standard car. The 964 introduced it. The 993 closed out air cooling with a twin-turbo flat-six that people still talk about in slightly hushed terms. The 996 moved everything to water and rebuilt the reputation from scratch. The 997.2 added direct injection and PDK and became, for a lot of owners, the one that got the balance exactly right. The 991.2 made the performance almost eerie in how little effort it seemed to require. The 992 turned the whole thing into a daily-usable weapon.
Through all of it the tachometer sat dead centre, doing the same job: telling you how much of an engine you had actually used, on a car engineered so that the answer was usually "not much". Six faces, three decades, one idea taken progressively further.
