Porsche has moved almost everything about the 911 at some point — the cooling, the wheelbase, the width, the gearbox — but never the tachometer. It has sat dead centre in front of the driver since the beginning, with the speedometer pushed politely to one side. Everything else on the dial did change: the typeface, the redline, the numbering, the shift from pure analogue to hybrid displays. This display traces that drift across the generations.

What's in the frame

Tachometer faces from across the 911's history, each rendered as a separate layered element and arranged in sequence. Read across and you can watch the redline climb, the numerals change character, and the small badges appear that separate a GT car from a Carrera.

How it's built

Each piece is assembled by hand, not printed. The components sit on a solid wood backboard inside an aluminium alloy frame, behind an acrylic glazing panel, with the parts physically layered so the display throws real shadows and changes as you move past it.
