The Shape That Refused to Change (and Never Stopped Changing)
In 1963, Butzi Porsche drew a longer, lower car with a fastback roofline and a flat-six hanging behind the rear axle. They called it the 901 until Peugeot complained about the middle zero. So it became the 911.
The original shape lasted through the 911G's sixteen-year run, then the 964 brought coil springs and power steering — changes purists still argue about. The 993 that followed is the one collectors call the last great air-cooled 911, and for many the one Porsche never topped for character.
Then the 996 switched to water cooling and split the fanbase with those headlights. But it also laid the engineering foundation for the GT3 and Turbo variants that define the modern 911. The 997 brought back round headlights. The 991 went wider than any 911 before it. And the 992 is the most capable one ever built — while still being recognizably the same car Butzi sketched sixty years ago.
Eight generations. The roofline barely moved. Everything underneath it transformed completely.
