Subaru's Other Side
Most people associate Subaru with rally stages and WRX mud flaps. The BRZ Super GT program told a different story. R&D Sport campaigned the BRZ in Japan's Super GT series, the country's premier touring car championship and one of the most competitive production-based racing series in the world.
The road-going BRZ runs a naturally aspirated flat-four. The Super GT version got the EJ20, a turbocharged 2.0L boxer that Subaru had spent decades perfecting in WRC competition, retuned for circuit racing and pushing 450 PS through a 6-speed sequential gearbox. The bodywork was widened, the suspension was purpose-built, and the interior was stripped to a roll cage, a racing seat, and the bare minimum of instrumentation.
What made this car interesting wasn't just the speed. It was the fact that Subaru was campaigning a lightweight rear-drive coupe platform in a series dominated by GT-R's, NSX's, and Supras. The BRZ R&D Sport was always the underdog. It raced anyway, and it gave Super GT some of its best battles in the process.
